Colby Charpentier

September 27, 2022 by

As an artist, Colby Charpentier formulates, tests, and designs alternative ceramic materials and processes. The resulting works are vessels that showcase these technologies. Recent projects include soft paste porcelain as an approximation of Western replication of Eastern porcelain, plaster-clay mixtures to capture the immediacy of wet plaster, and brick lattice to subvert the visual weight and expectations of brick and ceramic materials.

Colby Charpentier received his BFA in Ceramics and Glass from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in 2013, and an MFA in Ceramics from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2021. He has worked as a studio assistant to artists Daniel Clayman and Chris Gustin; and completed residencies at Sonoma Ceramics in Sonoma, CA, The Morean Center for Clay in St. Petersburg, FL, The Ceramics Program, Office for the Arts at Harvard University and American Museum of Ceramic Art in Pomona, CA. He taught classes at these residencies as well as Massachusetts College of Art and Design.

Austin Riddle

September 27, 2022 by

Austin Riddle’s pots are made as companions for you and your home. A vase for your table, full of freshly picked flowers as you and your partner eat breakfast and plan your day’s activities. Large platters and compartment trays to present home-cooked meals with friends on a warm summer evening. Whiskey sippers that nestle in warm hands, topped off as needed from a half-empty bottle of Jack Daniels.

Austin Riddle recently received his MFA in ceramics at Utah State University in Logan, Utah. He received his BFA in ceramics at the University of Utah in 2016. He has been an Artist-in-Residence at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, The Bright Angle in Asheville. North Carolina, and at Art Center West in Roswell, Georgia. He was awarded emerging artist by Ceramics Monthly in 2019 and has exhibited his work all over the United States.

Megan Thomas

September 26, 2022 by

As an artist, Megan Thomas seeks to tell stories about how people and animals respond to biological and emotional scarcity. Vessels are inspired by anthropomorphic pottery that appears in the early ceramics records of many cultures. While very old pottery may not divulge all secrets to modern viewers, many of these pots seem to be prayers for bounty or attempts at understanding. She finds interest in how environmental and personal collapse might mirror each other. As cycles of ecological boom and bust manifest themselves in the archaeological records of past cultures, so might the cycles of emotional dearth and plenty manifest themselves in the archaeological record of one human’s soul.

Megan Thomas grew up in Hamilton, Ohio. She studied ceramic sculpture and painting at Bowling Green State University as an undergraduate student and graduated with an MFA in ceramics from Utah State University in 2020. She is an enthusiastic birdwatcher.

Didem Mert

April 28, 2022 by

Being the first-gen American of a Turkish woodworker, I was raised in a design-rich environment that has influenced who I am and my current body of ceramic work. Geometry, texture, play, symbolism, color, and the functionality of my work emanates from this artistic environment.  I draw upon my cultural heritage to bring a unique, imaginative sensibility to my work. My pieces largely feature a combination of collage, drawing, and illustration to create a cultural visual language specific to my personal life. Combining vibrant colors and diverse textures to create pieces that are both eye-catching and practical I aim to create pieces that evoke emotion, nostalgia, and sense of playfulness directed through the color palette and textural surfaces.

Didem Mert (she/they) was born and raised in Cincinnati, OH. Mert received their  BFA (ceramics) from Northern Kentucky University in 2014 and MFA (ceramics) from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania in 2017. Mert has exhibited nationally in places such as The Clay Studio, AKAR, The Archie Bray Gallery, The Erie Art Museum, and over forty other venues. Didem’s work was published in Ceramics Monthly’s 2014 Undergraduate Showcase.  Mert was awarded a first prize grant through the Three Arts Foundation in 2014. They were featured on the cover of Pottery Making Illustrated’s January/February 2016 issue. Mert was included on C File’s list of 15 Potters to Watch in 2016 and was featured on Architectural Digest’s 10 Ceramic Artists Giving Pottery A Modern Update. Mert led a residency at Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts during the summer of 2017. They were honored as one of Ceramics Monthly’s Emerging Artists of 2018. Mert was a summer resident at the Archie Bray Foundation in 2018. Didem currently lives in Sebastopol, CA and works as a full-time studio potter and workshop instructor.

Chere Jiusto

April 22, 2022 by

There is nothing more enduring for me as an artist than working in clay. On so many levels clay connects me to the earth, to the world, and to ideas that flow across time.  Working in clay is an ancient practice and a doorway to a universe of creativity.  There are few words for how deep this feels, but just to say, the clay takes me places that surprise me every time.

Chere Jiusto is a returning resident artist at the Bray. A former student of Rudy Autio in Missoula, MT and Ben Steinzor in Buffalo, NY, she holds a BA in Fine Arts/Ceramics from the University of Montana. Recently retired from a career in historic preservation, she oversaw the stabilization of the Bray’s brickyard kilns with partners from the University of Pennsylvania and is currently working on documentation to designate the Archie Bray Foundation as a National Historic Landmark. Her ceramic work has focused on the intersection of art and tradition – tile making for historic buildings, individual hand-built pieces and thrown functional ware. She maintains a studio in Unionville at her mile-high home shared with her writer-husband Jim Robbins and the kids whenever they visit – Matt, Annika, Erin and Paul. She is forever grateful for life in Montana and her time with the Bray.
